One of the stretch goals of the OpenQuest 3rd Edition Kickstarter, was to provide support from myself for playing OpenQuest via the internet.
Two ways that is happening.
- A Quick Guide to Playing OpenQuest Online.
- An actual supported implementation of OpenQuest in an easily accessible and usable Virtual Table Top.
The first one will be delivered in a short web page to be hosted on this site and kept up to date with changes. The second is being delivered in Role VTT.

I’m currently focusing on getting this out by the end of this month, or very early next.
The following is the current text about Role VTT. The guide will also cover other options, such as playing via a Discord server, and the various resources that can help you play OpenQuest online.
Role VTT (PlayRole.com)
This is the officially supported VTT for OpenQuest, which I use for my games and maintain myself. Development of this was paid for by the backers of the 2020 OpenQuest 3rd Edition Kickstarter. Many thanks to them.
Role is basically good for theatre of mind style of play, and a good web-enabled user-friendly interface makes creating character sheets a breeze. Accessed via a web browser, it’s hosted on their servers, and you can play on mobile devices as well as via a desktop.
Visit Playrole.com and sign up for a free account.
GMs may want to become a Patron, which has a monthly fee paid yearly, which includes unlimited rooms (the virual space you run a game in) and Audio/Visual support within the app.
There are two versions.
OpenQuest Quickstart. A free version contains the OpenQuest Quickstart + premade characters, which you can access by signing up for Role for Free and typing “OpenQuest” in the search bar. [DN or Free Quickstarts]
OpenQuest 3rd Edition. A paid-for version which contains all the sheets and PDFS described below. Go to the Role store to purchase.
- Full character sheets (OpenQuest Character)
- Cut-down NPC character sheets (OpenQuest Goon),
- Combat tracker sheets (OpenQuest Combat Tracker),
- A sheet for recording sessions (OpenQuest Saga).
- A sheet the GM and the player use to keep track of the campaign information (OpenQuest Notes).
- Six pre-made characters – the characters from the Quickstart.
Also, the following PDFS in the Books section.
- OpenQuest 3rd edition main rulebook.
- OpenQuest Quickstart (rules + adventure).
